29 October 2021, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum (AF) organized a workshop on ‘Medico-Legal Documentation of Torture and Sexual Violence’ at Alfa House, New Baneshwor Kathmandu on 29 October 2021. The program was conducted successfully with altogether 30 participants (9 Females and 21 Male) including doctors, police personnel, government attorneys, members of the Bar Association and representatives from civil cociety organizations.
The main objective of the event was to train the young medical professionals on how to document the torture and sexual violence cases for the medical as well as legal purposes based in Istanbul Protocol. Likewise, it was aimed to sensitize to other stakeholders like court officials, police personnel, public prosecutors and defence lawyers on the importance of the medico-legal documentation for the fair trial, justice to the victims and legal action against the perpetrators. Furthermore, the training focused on the relevancy of mental state examination of a victim for proper medical diagnosis and injury report preparation so that a victim of violence can get proper medical and legal remedies. In the first session, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sagun Ballav Pant discussed about the significance of “Mental State Examination of Victims of Torture and Sexual Violence for Legal Purpose” and Prof. Dr. Harihar Wasti highlighted the importance of a proper “Medical Examination and Preparation of Injury Report of Victims of Torture and Sexual Violence for Legal Purpose” in the latter half of the event, followed by discussions.
