17 August 2011. Calling for a prompt legal action against those involved in a cold blooded killing of 19 Maoist activists at Doramba of Ramechhap district eight years ago, a group of human rights defenders have jointly issued a press release today on behalf of Accountability Watch Committee (AWC), a loose forum of human rights defenders. HR defenders have also drawn the attention of the government vis-à-vis the report of Doramba massacre submitted by the Human Rights Committee and demanded that the government implement the report of the Committee without further ado. The then Royal Nepal Army (RNA) had mercilessly butchered 19 unarmed Maoist activists at Dandakateri of Duduwa VDC on 17 August 2003 during the ceasefire between the then government and the Maoists. An independent probe committee formed one week after the event had concluded in its report that the then Unified Command led by the army had taken control over those activists and subsequently shot them with their hands tied at the back. The report further states that the event is in a serious breach of the international humanitarian law, particularly Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions.
Notwithstanding reiterative attempts of human rights activists, National Human Rights Commission and international communities to bring the alleged perpetrators to justice, none has so far been held accountable in this regard.
