Court Awards Compensation to Torture Survivor

15 June 2011. In its verdict regarding a torture case, the District Court of Dhanusha has today directed the authorities concerned to award torture survivor Santosh Kumar Shah a compensation amounting to NRs. 25,500/- and take departmental action against the perpetrators involved.

Santosh Kumar Sha, 18, a permanent resident of Tarapatti VDC-6, Tarapatti, Dhanusha district was arrested by Constable Narendra Jha at around 6.30 am on Aug 21, 2009 from his house under the allegation of public offence and was severely tortured at Ward Police Office, Tarapatti, Dhanusha district.

With legal assistance from Advocacy Forum, the victim had moved court under Torture Compensation Act-1996 on 17 September 2009.
