AF Organized Workshop with Journalists on Accountability for Human Rights

13 February 2025, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) jointly organized a “Workshop on Sensitive Media Reporting on Transitional Justice and Gender Issues” in Kathmandu. The two-day event (12 -13 February 2025) brought together more than 25 active journalists from across the country who report on transitional justice and gender issues.

On the first day of the workshop, Dr. Mandira Sharma, Founder of AF and Senior International Legal Advisor at the ICJ, provided updates on Nepal’s transitional justice process and discussed ways to ensure accountability for human rights violations.

Gita Rasaili, Vice-Chairperson of the Conflict Victim Women National Network, shared the perspectives of the victim community on conflict-related sexual violence and urged journalists to be more sensitive when covering stories involving survivors.

Nirmala Sharma, Chairperson of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, highlighted key concerns, challenges, and the way forward in reporting on conflict-related sexual violence.

On the second day of the workshop, Senior Journalist Shiva Gaule talked about the role of journalists in building accountability on human rights violations. Providing examples of his conflict-era reporting, Gaule urged the participating journalists to keep writing about human rights violations as they serve as evidence.

Participating journalists also shared their experiences covering transitional justice and gender issues, emphasizing that many victims’ stories remain untold.
