26 June 2024, Kathmandu: On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF) and Amnesty International published a public statement urging Government of Nepal to end the practice of torture and ill-treatment in various detention centres across the country.
Both the organisations called on the government to put an end to the use of torture as a tool of law enforcement and ensure justice, truth and reparations for victims.
Presenting some emblematic cases of torture in police custody, the organisations recommended the government to amend the Penal Code to bring it in line with international human rights law and standards, including the removal of existing statute of limitation on complaint duration.
They have also urged the government to establish an independent mechanism to monitor and investigate allegations of torture and custodial deaths.
The public statements are available in English and Nepali languages.
