Maina Sunuwar
Around 6 am on February 17, 2004, a group of RNA soldiers arrested Ms
Maina Sunuwar, a 15-year-old schoolgirl of Kharelthok VDC-6, Kavre
district. She disappeared since her arrest. Her family members, with
support from villagers and school where Maina was a student, visited
detention centers and Army barracks to find her, but the authorities
simply denied having arrested and detained her.

Further, the department critically reviews existing legal framework in Nepal and makes concerted efforts to harmonize them with international human rights standards. This department carries out the following activities:

- Intensive lobby and advocacy work for promoting fair trial standards
- Promote proactive and accessible legal aid system in the country
- Promoting good practices in the criminal justice system
- Capacity building of criminal justice stakeholders,
- Lobby to make criminal justice system more gender sensitive,
- Proactive and comprehensive legal aid in relation to two categories of cases (victims of human rights violations - especially of torture, disappearance, rape/sexual abuse, illegal arrest and detention - and children in armed forces detainees/juveniles detained in different detention centers)
- Critical assessment of domestic laws that contradict with international laws,
- Comprehensive documentation of contradictory and inadequate domestic laws, impact of such contradiction at national level,
- High level policy advocacy to harmonize national laws with international standards
- Strategic Litigation
