Programs

Advocacy Forum (AF) takes a proactive, empirical and sustainable approach to dealing with human rights violations. Our activities are interdisciplinary and attack the problem from all angles. Our mission is to eliminate human rights violations in Nepal and promote an atmosphere and legal structure that is conducive to the promotion of the rule of law and human rights. All of our programs are interlinked and complement each other.

Through our documentation department we continue to carefully document each human rights violation that we encounter. We know that it is only by collecting evidence of human rights violations that we will be able to challenge the culture of impunity that exists. To try to combat the abuse in detention centers we conduct daily visits to centers, closely monitoring the conditions inside. We also monitor children's rights and campaign for a separate juvenile justice system. Many detainees go without legal assistance and to address this problem we have established a legal aid service offering free legal assistance to every detainee who requests it. AF uses all of its work and research to lobby for change in the international arena and we also make use of international legal mechanisms to try and implement change. With the change of Nepal’s political regime, it became evident that we also needed to address issues of transitional justice. We were dealing with a large group of victims who had suffered during the transition and in response we established a transitional justice program.
