Maina Sunuwar

Around 6 am on February 17, 2004, a group of RNA soldiers arrested Ms Maina Sunuwar, a 15-year-old schoolgirl of Kharelthok VDC-6, Kavre district. She disappeared since her arrest. Her family members, with support from villagers and school where Maina was a student, visited detention centers and Army barracks to find her, but the authorities simply denied having arrested and detained her.

The Politics and Legalities of Impunity in Asia and Beyond

13 January 2012. Speaker: Tyrell Haberkorn, ANU; Suzanne Karstedt, Leeds University; Mandira Sharma, Advocacy Forum, Kathmandu. Date: 12:00pm - 2:00pm, 13 Jan 2012. Venue: Seminar Room 3, Hedley Bull Centre #130, ANU. This seminar will address impunity, the problem of perpetrators of serious crimes being protected from prosecution or other forms of punishment and accountability. It will examine both the theory and historical context of impunity, and its particular manifestations in Asia. It will cover questions such as why states fail to investigate certain crimes; the effect of impunity on victims; and the way that truth and reconciliation commissions affect impunity.

Three leading international experts will deal with aspects of impunity and there will be time for questions and discussion:

Dr Tyrell Haberkorn, CHL/SIPSS, CAP, ANU: Impunity and state violence in Thailand.

Professor Suzanne Karstedt, Professor of Criminology, Leeds University: Impunity: A criminological perspective.

Ms Mandira Sharma, Founder, Advocacy Forum, Kathmandu: Impunity in post-conflict Nepal.
