Transitional Justice Department
The department oversees the implementation of various programs on transitional justice in Nepal. The aim of the department is to contribute towards Nepal's attempt to post-conflict recovery and retroactive justice by increasing access of victims to justice. All of its activities are focused on the establishment of Transitional Justice mechanisms to establish the actual truth by identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators, provide reparations to victims and create conducive environment for reconciliation in order to provide justice for the victims, end the culture of impunity and reinforce the rule of law.
Presently, the legal structure in Nepal does not have the capacity to address the human rights violations that escalated to a great number during the conflict. As there can be no concrete political stability and democracy without addressing these past abuses, a comprehensive program for transitional justice, including a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and successful criminal prosecutions is needed to lay the foundations for sustainable peace. The goal of the department is to initiate dialogue throughout the country between victims, stakeholders and civil society. We bring major actors of civil society together to engage with parliamentarians and other stakeholders to discuss the needs of victims and to campaign for the creation of a legal framework which addresses accountability adequately.
The department works in close coordination with Conflict Victims' Society for Justice (CVSJ-Nepal) and Accountability Watch Committee (AWC).
Please see Annual Report for detailed activities of the department.
