Lobby and Advocacy Department
Similarly, we
conduct awareness campaigns, seminars, workshops, media campaigns and
consultation meetings to bring about changes in our crusade against
impunity. Besides, we have continuously been lobbying for accession to
and ratification of International Human Rights Instruments including
Convention for protection of all persons from Enforced/Involuntary
Disappearances, OPCAT and Rome Statute etc.
AF has made presentations in different meetings and events in the USA, Switzerland, Finland, Korea, Hong Kong, UK, Germany, Canada, India and Sri Lanka. During those presentations, human rights, the rule of law, threats to human rights defenders and the issue of impunity were discussed.
Because of AF's lobbying, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, the UN Secretary General's Special Representatives on Human Rights Defenders and the Working Group on Involuntary Disappearances (WEGID) all visited Nepal. We had extensive meetings with all and facilitated visits to victims.
Prior to the peace accord being signed we sought support from the international community in favor of democratic movement in Nepal. We provided information about the situation in the country to the international community including the media. We played an active role in lobbying for the establishment of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal. AF, with the help of these and other concerned agencies, has placed Nepal at the forefront for significant human rights attention.
